If you are staying in Santa Maria town – Sal, in the Cape Verde islands, the salt mines just northeast of Santa Maria is at walking distance, just 10 minutes away. The area is smaller than the salt mines in Pedra Lume, but still worth a visit at walking distance. The salt mines in Cape Verde and Sal are still being used in a small scale, and it is interesting to see the rectangular pools of white salty water drying to crystallized salt.
